Sylvia Mae Smith Clemens, an 83-year-old dedicated art teacher from Caruthersville, MO, passed away on January 27, 2024. She leaves behind a legacy in education and a deep commitment to her faith.

Sylvia Mae Smith Clemens, 83, of Caruthersville, MO, passed away on January 27th, 2024, after having suffered a massive stroke. Family was still able to pray with her before her passing.

Sylvia was born May 2nd, 1941, in Louisiana, MO, the daughter of Sylvester “Vet” Winchester Smith and Nellie Mae Brown Smith.

Sylvia graduated from Bowling Green, MO High School, then went on to Hannibal-LaGrange College, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Missouri earning a bachelor’s degree in education. She went on to obtain a Lifetime Teaching Certificate. K-12 art education & medieval history were her areas/expertise of teaching.

Sylvia worked as an art teacher for many years. She was a teacher in Caruthersville, MO; Tipton, MO; Fair Play, MO; and St Charles, MO as well as the states of Illinois and Louisiana. Sylvia loved teaching art and felt blessed to be a teacher. She loved the kids she taught and working with families. Aside from teaching, Sylvia worked for AG Edwards as an executive assistant in St Louis, MO for five years. In her free time Sylvia loved to sketch and paint.

Sylvia was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Caruthersville, MO. Her faith was very important to her. She enjoyed reading her Bible, as well as books written by Billy Graham and Jimmy Carter.

Sylvia is survived by one son, John Clemens (Heather) of Hannibal, MO and two grandchildren, Mackenna and Evan Clemens. Preceding Sylvia in death were her parents, Sylvester and Nellie Smith.

At this time there will be no services. Sylvia will be interred with her parents at the family cemetery, Kilby Cemetery in Curryville, MO.
