A class at Caruthersville Middle School explores courage by examining the fears of Black leaders and imagining a world where fear prevailed. Students create a chain of fears to symbolize unity in overcoming them.

FIGHTING FEAR Shonda’s class at Caruthersville Middle School recently spent an afternoon creating chain links with their deepest fears. Her class discussed Black leaders and what their biggest fears were. Then they discussed those fears and how they changed the future. Next they discussed what they thought the outcome would be if those leaders fell victim to their fear. How would our future have changed if Black leaders were too fearful to speak up? Students then wrote their deepest fears on a colorful piece of construction paper and stapled them one by one creating a unified chain of fear. We all have a fear of something, we must come together, stand together as a unified group to fight those fears together.
