The First Baptist Church addresses the age-old question of why bad things happen to good people, emphasizing that suffering is part of life even for the faithful. The church offers comfort in God's presence and invites community support through their services.

First Baptist Church: When Bad Things Happen to Good People

Life can often feel deeply unfair. Perhaps you’ve experienced moments where you’ve asked, “Why did this happen to me? Have I done something wrong?” These are natural questions when faced with pain and grief. But rest assured, asking these questions does not mean you lack faith. Even faithful hearts wrestle at times with the brokenness of the world. Scripture reminds us that grief and suffering have always been a part of life, even for those God calls His own. Joseph was betrayed and imprisoned. Job lost everything. Even Jesus, the Son of God, endured rejection, betrayal, and unimaginable suffering. But their lives also stand as testimonies to God’s enduring faithfulness. Their lives exemplify the promise of God through the psalmist David, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).

When bad things happen to good people, it can seem impossible to find meaning or peace. But here’s the truth we hold onto as believers: God is not distant in our suffering. He is present, close, tenderly mending and comforting the brokenhearted, as Psalm 34 promises. God does not cause our pain, but He works through it in ways we might not understand right now. Romans 8:28 literally says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Even when life is at its darkest, trust that God is weaving a greater story. It may not be immediately clear, but His plan is made perfect in His time, not ours.

Grief can feel isolating, but you do not walk this road alone. God walks with you, every step, and He places people in your life to support and uplift you. I am speaking from experience. Lean on your community, whether it’s your church, family, or friends. Through them, God often brings glimpses of His love to remind you that you are seen, heard, and cherished. If you are in a season of suffering today, take heart in His promises. Hold fast to the truth that God is with you in the storm, bringing comfort, healing, and unexpected blessings. Lift your pain to Him in prayer. He is the Good Shepherd, and He fiercely tends to His flock. No pain is wasted when placed in God’s hands — He will redeem every tear, restoring what was lost in ways that go beyond what we could imagine. Trust in His love and lean on His everlasting arm.
